St Mary's Church Extension 2010

SUSSEX HERITAGE TRUST AWARDS 2010
An Ecclesiastical Building Award

has been won by St. Mary’s Church for its Building  Project – St. Mary’s Room. The Stonemasons, T. E. Tilley Ltd, also won an award for their work on this  project.  Sussex Heritage Trust was established in 1977 to  preserve, improve and encourage the appreciation  of the architectural and natural heritage of Sussex. Awards are made for a restoration, repair,  conversion or development  scheme  which  improves  all,  or  part,  of  an existing or former ecclesiastical building whilst  maintaining, where appropriate, its ecclesiastical or consecrated status.

Well done to David Billinghurst, Richard Crook  (Architect), the Wardens and all those involved.

At St Mary's Church, in 2010 we were able to enhance considerably our facilities for Church services by adding a toilet a separate room with a kitchenette for use by the whole community in many different ways.  This extension was complete in 2010 to the south of the south aisle. The diagrams and caption below show the church before and after.

We have photos of the work and latest news. We are still looking for donations.

Current state: Completed, in use and available for hire.

For pictures of the  works see here.

Sketch showing the outside of the proposed extension, to the south of the tower and south aisle.

We aim to construct it in a style that complements the Church with high quality materials.

This plan shows:-

How the extension will fit with the existing church

The new access from within the church

The new external entrance.

This larger plan of the extension itself shows its scope.

We have seating for 50, a kitchenette for social events, disabled access and, ("at long last", some will say!), a toilet.

To create the doorway from the church into the extension, the beautiful "children's window" will be moved and installed as the east window of the extension.
